Living in the Mystery

QFAS has published a new book, Living in the Mystery: Between Head and Heart by Jan Arriens. Jan is a member of QFAS and we were very happy to agree to publish the book. It’s available from Fee Berry ( and costs £7 including postage and packing.

In this book, Jan Arriens grapples with the tension between rationality and intuition and scepticism and experience that has played such a big part in his life. On the basis of happenings in his own life and in the lives of others, including prisoners facing execution, Jan looks at the validity and significance of such experiences.

He explores the mystery at the heart of our existence, examining whether seemingly inexplicable experiences suggest a wholly different realm of consciousness, and how we can encounter a whole new level of love, compassion and awe – and also confront doubt.

Tribute to Angela Howard

QFAS members were greatly saddened to learn of the death of Angela Howard, founding member and much loved Clerk of QFAS, just one day before our 2020 autumn conference. Diagnosed with suspected cancer early in the year, her operation was delayed by the COVID lockdown. When she was at last admitted for treatment the cancer was deemed inoperable, so Angela prepared for her departure for another place.

During the online autumn conference QFAS members shared their memories of Angela and paid tribute to her many achievements for QFAS over the years, the most recent being the new anthology of Quaker spiritual experience, The Life That Never Ends. You can order the anthology from our Books and literature page, and some of our memories of Angela have been recorded during the AGM on the conference DVD. We miss her greatly but draw comfort from the knowledge of the great adventure she is now pursuing in the life beyond.
